A Beginner's Guide To Making Money From Blogging

Before you can earn money by blogging, you have to understand exactly what a blog is. For a start, a blog is not a money-making machine. However, if you set about it the right way, you can earn money from your blog. You may even be able to make a full-time living from blogging.

A blog is a website with a series of articles which are usually about a niche topic. The reason that most profit-making bloggers stick to a niche is because it's easier to get readers to return if they are interested in what you have to say. Too many subjects might mean that there is something for everyone but readers usually don't want to sieve through a mountain of articles to find the one or two that interest them.

If your blog is about cats then don't try to interest your readers in dog collars. Search engines will rank your site higher if your blog is obviously about a single main subject.

Blogs originated as online diaries, posted by the bloggers as a hobby. Many, if not most, blogs are still no more than a hobby. However, some astute bloggers recognized that their readers would be of great interest to advertisers. Thus the money-making blog was born.

Perhaps the simplest way to find advertisers for your blog is to use Google Adsense. It costs nothing to put Adsense ads on your site and Google makes the whole process very easy. When one of your readers clicks on an advert, you earn a little money. The more readers you have, the more clicks you'll get.

You should also consider banner advertising. A merchant places banners on your site and pays you a commission for any sales or sales leads that they generate when visitors click them. When you find that you are making some money with your blog, you might want to become a fully-fledged affiliate marketer, but that's for later.

Blogs can be set up at no cost by using Wordpress, Blogspot and other sites. This is an easy way to test the water to see if your ideas for a blog topic will attract an audience. Once you have established a readership, you will probably move your blog to your own site where you can have full control of it.

Bloggers who earn money generally start out with a plan. They know something about their target readership, they know what that audience wants to read about and what that audience is likely to buy. A review of a product advertised on the blog can greatly increase sales, and money-making bloggers never miss an opportunity to increase sales.

However, don't think that blog readers want nothing more than reviews and adverts. They want content; they want something interesting to read so give it to them. Research your posts and pay attention to any comments that are left. Blog readers who leave a comment will always come back to see if the blogger or other visitors have left a reply.

If your blog is informative or funny then it will build momentum by word of mouth and your visitor numbers will snowball. A great thing about owning a popular blog is that it will earn money while you sleep. It's like owning your own magazine. Just like a magazine owner, you might eventually hire others to write your blog for you. Some blogs are so popular that other bloggers are pleased to write for them for nothing, just to get their name known and a backlink to their own blog.

If you do decide to become a professional blogger, remember this: the first step is the hardest, so take it today and get it over with. Good luck!
